A practical checklist for a WordPress redesign
Protect existing URLs, clarify the editing workflow, and test the journeys that matter before launch.
Inventory the site visitors already use
Export indexable URLs and group them by template. Look at the journeys people actually complete, such as booking a call or finding a location. Assign each old URL a destination before the redesign, including pages that will be merged.
Prototype the editing workflow
Choose one page a teammate edits frequently. Build it in staging, then ask them to update its content without developer help. Use their feedback to decide which components need presets, custom fields, or simpler defaults.
Rehearse the cutover
Keep a fresh backup and agree on who can publish during the switch. Test redirects, forms, mobile navigation, and analytics events. Run a second check on the live site after DNS and caches have settled.
